Anything Bespoke? 3D Printing is the answer

Personalized design is getting popularity, as they address the specific human factors, ergonomics, and usability. However, this world is not so small that we can make mass manufacture bespoke products for everyone on Earth.

We, humans come in many different shapes and sizes. Whatever we use, wear, consume is manufactured in standard sizes and shape. For instance, a spectacle I’m wearing comes in 3 sizes — Small, Medium, Large. I can choose the best one fitting my face. But it can’t be ‘perfect’ if its not Bespoke.

With the conventional production economics, we make generalized products which comes in standard sizes (and shapes sometimes), which broadly divides the end-users in lots e.g. size ranging from S, M, L, XL, XXL, … and so on. But these lots comprise of population in millions. Not every product suits everyone perfectly. And getting a personalized or customized design, size, or shape comes at a cost.

Getting a bespoke fitting is a luxury in itself . But can we make it affordable? Lets dig in…

3D Printing, or Additive Manufacturing is one such technology which has enabled “Mass Customization” in place of “Mass Manufacturing”, at a much lower cost than traditional methods.

3D printed shoes and a dress – all bespoke

From spectacles to shoes, toys to tools, implants to instruments, Jewellery, Auto parts, mechanical gears, even satellites are getting 3d printed today. All for 2 particular reasons:-

  1. Bespoke geometries and size requirements
  2. Faster time, from prototype to production

In the recent years, 3d printing industry has revolutionized in many ways. Today there are numerous options for materials, production techniques, and printing sizes, which has led us to see 3d printing being a technology which can deliver much faster results than traditional manufacturing

Today, we can easily say that we need anything bespoke, 3d printing can solve the puzzle. Yes it has the right resources to manufacture majority of things we use today. And the capacity+capability is increasing with each day.

That day is very near when a footwear companies don’t sell sizes, rather they make bespoke footwear at the point of sale. Ergonomically designed products will be a common thing. All at much lower cost than what it is today.

Thanks to 3D printing — We can get anything Bespoke!
